Smoke from fires in Africa fertilizes the Amazon over 6,500 miles away

Image
It’s tempting to think that two locations separated by over 6,500 miles wouldn’t have much of an impact on one another, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Our planet is like a vast web, and continents can play a major role in the health of another, even when separated by an ocean. That’s the message behind a new study by the Unversity of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, which reveals that fires which rage in Africa actually fertilize the Amazon rainforest in South America. The study, which was published Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , also suggests the Atlantic and Southern oceans benefit greatly from the smoke of African fires. Don't Miss : Hey look, Amazon is giving away free money The researchers made their determination based on an examination of the airborne particles sent high into the atmosphere from fires in Africa. Those particles are carried aloft for thousands of miles but eventually come back down, and the ph...

Persistent Frenchman will try again this weekend to cross the English Channel on a hoverboard

Image
They call him “Le Rocketman,” an affectionate nod to the flying Frenchman Franky Zapata’s ambition to cross the English Channel via a jet-powered hoverboard — something he’s going to try a second time to pull off this weekend after crashing into the water before. As we previously noted , Zapata crashed on his prior attempt to cross the channel just a few days ago after rocky waves disrupted his attempt to do a quick mid-flight refueling stop. His next attempt, per French media, is set for Sunday. Don't Miss : Hey look, Amazon is giving away free money Zapata has already broken one record, that of the longest hoverboard flight in the world which he set in 2016 after a nearly 7,400-foot-long flight along the French coast. He’s trying to pull off this new feat in honor of the 110th anniversary of the first-ever flight across the channel by a French pilot back in 1909. Come Sunday, Zapata will embark on a 20-minute flight from Sangatte on the French side of the channel over to S...

PlayStation Plus free games for August: ‘Sniper Elite 4′ and ‘WipEout’

If you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, you’ll get both the triplet of futuristic racing games in the WipEout Omega Collection (which has a VR mode too) and Sniper Elite 4 , which got solid reviews when it launched back in 2017. Don't Miss : Hey look, Amazon is giving away free money Here’s the complete lineup of free PlayStation 4 games available for PlayStation Plus subscribers in August: WipEout Omega Collection : WipEout Omega Collection brings together all the content from WipEout HD, WipEout HD Fury and WipEout 2048, enhanced for PS4 and PS4 Pro. Compared to the original games, textures are now clear when viewed up close: you can even read some of the small text on the shi...

Apple and Samsung phone sales are down, and $1,000+ prices are one reason why

Image
There was at least one common theme reflected in the earnings that handset arch-rivals Apple and Samsung both reported this week – declines in revenue attributable to both companies’ pricey smartphones. Apple, for its part, no longer breaks out unit sales anymore but did disclose a decline in iPhone revenue Tuesday of 12% compared to the same quarter in 2018. The iPhone maker generated $25.99 billion in revenue from the smartphone during its most recent fiscal quarter, down from a little more than $29 billion in the year-ago period. At Samsung, the story was similar. Don't Miss : Hey look, Amazon is giving away free money Samsung’s earnings announcement reflected an increase in smartphone shipments during the most recent quarter, compared to the same period in 2018. But the company said that increase stemmed from demand for its less-expensive models like the Galaxy A series. Unfortunately, “sales of flagship models fell QoQ on weak sales momentum for the Galaxy S10 and stag...

A bizarre leak might’ve just given us our first look at an actual iPhone 11R

Image
The Galaxy Note 10 launches next week, which means we expect to see more and more leaks showing the handset in the wild. One such leak happened just hours ago , when someone posted an image of the Note 10+ on Twitter before quickly deleting the post. But the internet never forgets, and that image was saved for posterity. Now, here’s where things get interesting. Upon closer inspection, it turns out that the person who took the photo of Samsung’s unreleased Galaxy Note 10+ may have been using another unreleased phone to capture the picture: Apple’s iPhone 11R. Don't Miss : Hey look, Amazon is giving away free money Rather than looking at the Galaxy Note 10+ In the images below, pay attention to the phone in the reflection on the screen. The Note’s screen isn’t turned on and is facing the sky, which means we get a better view of the person taking the picture and the device he’s using since the Note’s screen acts as a mirror. The first to observe the strange occurrence was the ...

Leak seems to confirm another key feature of Samsung’s unreleased iPad Pro rival

Image
Samsung is expected to unveil its latest iPad Pro rival at some point this week, at least according to a recent teaser video , but the Galaxy Tab S6 isn’t exactly a secret . The new tablet has been featured in an increasing number of leaks recently that revealed several of its signature features, including a few tricks that aren’t available on any other Android tablet or even the iPad Pro. And now, we have an actual image that seems to confirm yet another Tab S6 signature feature. Don't Miss : Wi-Fi will never be as fast as Ethernet, and this $43 box turns any wall outlet into a gigabit Ethernet port In recent weeks, we saw leaked photos of the tablet as well as leaked press renders that told us the phone would have a dual-lens camera on the back, a first for tablets. Also, the Tab S6 will feature a groove on the back, the leaks revealed, that will house the new S Pen stylus — again, we had photos showing this feature as well. But the tablet was also rumored to pack a 10.5-in...

Huge leak: This is the Galaxy Note 10+

Image
We’re now exactly one week away from the official unveiling of Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ flagship smartphones — not that they need an official unveiling at this point. Practically everything there is to know about Samsung’s upcoming new phablet duo has already leaked time and time again, from specs and features to pricing and even the release date. We know both new Galaxy Note 10 models will be powered by the upgraded Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor, they’ll have new triple-lens rear cameras, and they’ll both sport large Super AMOLED screens with a hole-punch design similar to the Galaxy S10. Unlike the S10, however, the Note 10 and Note 10+ will both have a selfie camera that’s centrally positioned at the top of the screen. Beyond all the details that have leaked, we’ve also seen the Note 10 and Note 10+ designs leak over and over again for the past few months. As many times as we’ve seen these phones though, it has almost always been in leaked press render...

Did Google just copy OnePlus with the new Pixel 4 launch strategy?

Image
Google has been making Android phones of its own for several years, well-before OnePlus launched its first One handset, but it’s the latter that’s having better success in stores lately.
Every year, the latest Pixel and OnePlus devices are on a shortlist of highly anticipated smartphones. Google’s newest Chrome update makes it easier to avoid paywalls

Apple's Quarterly Profit Falls as iPhone Sales Sputter

Apple's iPhone sales are still sputtering while the company tries to offset the decline by milking more money from digital services such as music. The latest evidence of the iPhone's waning popularity had been expected. Even so, the confirmation in Tuesday's fiscal third-quarter earnings report underscored the challenges facing a company that has been riding the smartphone revolution for the past decade. Festival Gunman ID'd; Had Referred to Neo-Nazi Manifesto The iPhone's downturn is the main reason Apple's profit for the April-June period fell 13% to $10 billion. The good news is Apple has several ways it can still make money from the 900 million iPhones in use today. Besides selling new models to current iPhone owners after the current devices eventually wear out, Apple has positioned itself to make billions of dollars more from music, video and gaming subscriptions, maintenance plans and commissions from apps selling their own wares on iPhones. 3...

Scientists in Japan get clearance for growing human-animal hybrids

Image
Genetic modification can be a touchy subject in scientific circles, especially when the life form being modified is an animal. Researchers fear that the consequences of rogue scientists “playing God” will lead us down a scary path, and they may be right, but the Japanese government just took a careful step forward by approving the creation of human-rodent hybrids. Geneticist Hiromitsu Nakauchi and his team plan to use human cells to grow organs in mouse and rat embryos, eventually allowing the embryos to be carried to term and birthed as the first documented human-animal hybrids. Don't Miss : Wi-Fi will never be as fast as Ethernet, and this $43 box turns any wall outlet into a gigabit Ethernet port As potentially frightening as the term “human-animal hybrid” looks, it’s actually far less scary than you might imagine. The rodents won’t necessarily look any different than they would otherwise, at least on the outside, but will have human organ cells inside. The eventual goal ...
