Some of your favorite ‘Stranger Things’ characters almost looked a lot different

Image
“Jopper” is the affection fan-named pairing of old childhood flames Jim Hopper and Joyce Byers on Netflix’s Stranger Things , with the bestowing of that nickname a testament not only to how much fans adore the gruff sheriff and loving mom but also how perfectly matched the actors are who portray them. So perfectly matched, in fact, that it’s almost impossible to see how the Duffer Brothers, who created the hit Netflix series, were considering Ewan McGregor and Sam Rockwell at one point for the role of Hopper. While Naomi Watts and Marissa Tomei were likewise possible considerations for the character of Ms. Byers. Don't Miss : Whoa… Amazon’s $25 Alexa smart plug is down to $5, and you’re nuts if you don’t get one That revelation comes via a new report from The Independent , which sheds light on details in the so-called show bible the Duffer Brothers used when they were first taking meetings with TV industry executives and trying to get the show made. Watch a man brazenly light a cigarette at gunpoint during an armed robbery

Image
If you think you’re cool under pressure, you’ve got absolutely nothing on a St. Louis man who — in a scene that could have easily been part of a Tarantino movie — calmly and brazenly lit a cigarette while the bar he was in was being robbed. Not only that, our fearless hero refused to let the robber snatch his smartphone away. All the while, the robber was carrying around an assault weapon that was later revealed to be a Hi-Point Carbine. If that sounds familiar, the Hi-Point Carbine was one of the weapons used during the 1999 Columbine school shooting. Don't Miss : Whoa… Amazon’s $25 Alexa smart plug is down to $5, and you’re nuts if you don’t get one The robbery itself was captured on video and shows all the other bar patrons smartly take immediate cover. Our cigarette toting hero, meanwhile, doesn’t seem to show the tiniest ounce of concern or fear. What’s more, he doesn’t even flinch when the robber went around the bar and briefly pointed his weapon in his direction. Inde...

We catch up with the cast of ‘Carnival Row,’ Amazon’s new ‘Game of Thrones’-style fantasy

Image
In the opening scene of Amazon’s new Game of Thrones -style fantasy series Carnival Row —  set in a kind of steampunk, alternate universe version of Victorian London that’s populated by humans as well as magical creatures — we see a persecuted group of fairies running for their lives. Shots ring out in a forest as the humans who populate the fictional city of The Burgue literally hunt them down, setting up a kind of Make The Burgue Great Again dynamic that casts a shadow over the storyline that we eventually come to learn also involves a serial killer preying on the fairies. Don't Miss : Whoa… Amazon’s $25 Alexa smart plug is down to $5, and you’re nuts if you don’t get one One by one, the fairies are cut down as bullets mercilessly rip through the forest fog. Direwolf-style four-legged killers on leashes are let loose to run down the survivors. An Irish fairy named Vignette Stonemoss (played by Cara Delevingne) looks to be the sole survivor from among the pursued, and she ev...

If your local cineplex is especially quite this week, it might be because there isn’t much to see. Sure, there are still a few holdovers from previous weeks, but not a single major blockbuster hit theaters this week. Thankfully, the trailers almost made up for it this week. We got a new glimpse of the upcoming trilogy conclusion, The Rise of Skywalker , from Disney’s D23 event early this week, and it was just enough to get us excited. But that was just the tip of the iceberg, as you’ll see when you scroll down to watch the rest of the trailers. Here’s what Hurricane Dorian looks like from the International Space Station

Image
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station don’t typically spend their days checking out weather back on Earth, but when a storm as large as Hurricane Dorian is rolling across the ocean you can’t help but catch a glimpse. Hurricane Dorian is making its way to the United States, and it’s expected to make landfall sometime early next week. It’s on a path for Florida as we speak, and coastal residents are preparing for the worst, anticipating a state of emergency and widespread damage. From space, however, things seem a lot more serene. ‘Destiny 2’ will get a battle pass, because every game is ‘Fortnite’ now

Image
Countless changes are in store for Destiny 2 in the coming weeks, from the launch of the Shadowkeep expansion to the debut of Destiny 2: New Light , which will drop the price of the base game to free. But Bungie is also mixing up the game’s progression system substantially as well, giving players more tangible goals to reach for throughout each new season without having to depend on the right loot randomly dropping after a mission. One way that Bungie will accomplish this is by adding a Fortnite -style battle pass (called a season pass in Destiny 2 ) which allows players to earn up to 100 ranks throughout the season, each of which comes with its own reward. There is a free track and a premium track each season, and if you want access to the premium track, you’ll have to pay $10. That $10 will also let you play all of the additional seasonal content Bungie brings to the game. Don't Miss : Whoa… Amazon’s $25 Alexa smart plug is down to $5, and you’re nuts if you don’t get one ...

Report says Galaxy Fold might actually cost less than Samsung said it would

Image
The coming week is shaping up to be pretty eventful for Samsung, thanks to a few key product launches. The Galaxy Watch Active 2, for example, is rumored to be heading for a Sept. 6 launch in South Korea — on the same day that Samsung will reportedly launch, at last, its first foldable smartphone , the Galaxy Fold. At this point, the rumor is that Samsung will take advantage of the first day of the IFA 2019 consumer electronics trade show in Berlin — which runs from Friday, Sept. 6, to Wednesday, Sept. 11 — as a high-profile opportunity to attract attention for the Galaxy Fold’s much-anticipated launch. The company has supposedly fixed the design and software problems that doomed the original April launch, and while it’s monumentally important to ensure those earlier problems are indeed fixed, the company may also have another trick up its sleeve. Don't Miss : Whoa… Amazon’s $25 Alexa smart plug is down to $5, and you’re nuts if you don’t get one Another pretty intriguing rum...

Researchers detail the most dangerous piece of iOS malware we’ve ever seen

Image
Earlier this month, security researchers for Google’s Project Zero revealed a wild iOS exploit that would allow a malicious actor to completely take over a targeted device with absolutely no interaction from the device owner themselves. Apple ultimately patched the exploit, though there’s no indication that the exploit was actually used in the wild. The same, however, can’t be said about a new piece of malware recently disclosed by security researchers working for Google’s Project Zero. In a jaw-dropping report, Ian Beer of Project Zero reveals how a collection of hacked websites distributed malware to any iOS device that visited the site in question. The malware relied upon quite a few 0-day vulnerabilities in iOS and reportedly impacted devices running iOS 10 through iOS 12. Don't Miss : Whoa… Amazon’s $25 Alexa smart plug is down to $5, and you’re nuts if you don’t get one The sites serving up the malware weren’t mentioned but are said to receive upwards of thousands of vi...

Leak shows the OnePlus 7T Pro won’t be the big upgrade some were expecting

Image
Apple’s iPhone 11 and Google’s Pixel 4 are undoubtedly the most anticipated phones that have yet to be announced this year, but OnePlus likely has another flagship to launch before 2019 ends as well. As it has over the past several years, OnePlus is expected to release an updated model of its latest handset with upgraded specifications and new features. But if you were expecting a brand new design, a recent leak suggests you’ll be disappointed. On Friday, 91mobiles teamed up with Twitter’s @OnLeaks to unveil CAD-based renders of the rumored OnePlus 7T Pro, as well as the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition. Although some leaks showed off a new camera array and other subtle hardware tweaks, this design of the phone in this leak is identical to that of the OnePlus 7 Pro. How might they pursue the safest and most lethal method of attack?

Pharma company mix-up results in very hairy babies

Image
A recent outbreak of so-called “werewolf syndrome” among babies in Spain prompted an investigation by health officials who eventually discovered that a drug company was mislabeling its products. A total of 17 cases of unexpected hair growth in young children — a condition known as hypertrichosis — initially left doctors puzzled, but a check of a nearby pharmaceutical company’s operations revealed the cause. As Guardian reports, drug supplier FarmaQuimica Sur was found to be accidentally mislabeling the medication minoxidil, which is the active ingredient in hair regrowth drugs like Rogaine. The drug was distributed to pharmacies as omeprazole, a drug to treat gastric discomfort.
